1978-79 was the first full season with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Dan Maloney. He’d come over from the Detroit Red Wings for Errol Thompson on March 13, 1978. Maloney arrived in time to play 13 regular season and 13 playoff games for the Leafs in 1977-78.
Dan was originally a first round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft going 14th overall. In 1969-70, he was teamed with Darryl Sittler with the London Knights. That year, Maloney scored a respectable 31 goals while finishing second to Steve Durbano with 232 penalty minutes, 139 behind Durbano.
A three time 20 goal scorer in the NHL, Maloney had consecutive seasons with 27 goals, in 1974-75 with the Los Angeles Kings and 1975-76 with the Red Wings. With Toronto in 1980-81, Dan recorded his third and final NHL hat trick, scoring three goals against the Minnesota North Stars on December 15, 1980. His second goal was the game winner in a match that saw both Toronto goalie Jiri Crha and Stars tender Gilles Meloche each face 45 shots in the 6-3 Buds win.
Between 1970-71 and 1981-82, Dan Maloney played 737 regular season and 40 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was part of the June 23, 1975 trade that sent Marcel Dionne to the Kings.
