Second draft choice in the 1970 Amateur Draft but many hockey scouts in the NHL figure Dale is as good as the first choice – Gilbert Perreault. Great things are expected of him. He is rated as the best defenseman to come out of junior hockey since Bobby Orr made his debut in 1966-67. Played forward and defense with Toronto Marlboros in junior hockey, scoring 39 goals and 40 assists in his final season.

Details

Dale Tallon didn’t quite have the same impact for the Vancouver Canucks that Gilbert Perreault had for the Buffalo Sabres in 1970-71. Perreault was the runaway winner of the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. However, Tallon still a great campaign and finished fifth in Calder voting with Jude Drouin, Gilles Villemure and Tom Webster coming in between.

On March 16, 1971 at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum, Tallon had a four point game against the Chicago Blackhawks, a team he would be traded to prior to the 1973-74 NHL season. He was involved in all four Vancouver goals in a 7-4 loss to the much more powerful Hawks. He scored his 12th of the season on Gilles Meloche while assisting on two goals by Rosaire Paiement and one by Bobby Schmautz.

In that game, he had an incident with Jerry Korab in the first period with both receiving minors for high sticking. On May 14, 1973, Korab and Tallon would switch teams in a trade between the Canucks and Chicago with Gary Smith also going to Vancouver.

The comparison between Dale and Bobby Orr never much panned out. The only similar number that the two share is a short NHL career with Orr playing 657 games and Tallon playing 642. The two were teammates for a short time with Chicago.

Between 1970-71 and 1979-80, Dale Tallon played 642 regular season and 33 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Vancouver Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
