One of the top defensive fowards in the NHL, Claude burst out with a 33 goal year in 1961-62 and explained it all by saying he’s shortened his stick. It was a banner year in more ways than one. He’d agreed on a bonus of $100 for every goal over 15.

That 33 goal season for Claude Provost in 1961-62 would remain a career high. He led the Montreal Canadiens with a one goal edge over Gilles Tremblay. It also put him in a three way tie for second place in the NHL with Frank Mahovlich and Gordie Howe, 17 behind leader Bobby Hull.

Over his career, Provost topped the 20 goal plateau three times and was best known as checking / penalty killing specialist. The last of those 20 goal campaigns would come in 1964-65, scoring 27. That total and his 64 points led the Canadiens. Claude placed fifth in the NHL for goal scoring and sixth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy.

In that 1964-65 NHL season, Provost recorded two four point games, both on a goal and three assists. The first was in a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on November 11, 1964, factoring in on all of Montreal’s goals. He had helpers on goals by Ralph Backstrom, Dave Balon and Gilles Tremblay while scoring his lone goal late in the game on Chicago goalie Glenn Hall.

Between 1955-56 and 1969-70, Claude Provost played 1,005 regular season and 126 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. Over that time, he helped the Habs to nine Stanley Cup championships and was the Bill Masterton Trophy winner in 1967-68.
