Details
After his best season offensively, to date, Chico Maki had a setback in 1966-67, appearing in just 56 regular season games for the Chicago Blackhawks and scoring just nine goals. However, five of those nine were game winners.
Perhaps one of his best performances over his NHL career was totaling 12 points over 14 playoff games in 1964-65, second on the team behind just Bobby Hull. Much of that was in the opening round against the Detroit Red Wings when he put up eight points in seven games, including three assists in a game three 5-2 win.
In that game, played on April 6, 1965 at Chicago Stadium, Chico assisted on the opening goal of the game, scored by Bill Hay, along with a pair by Hull. He had just a single shot on net in the game and the Blackhawks as a whole had just 16 on Detroit goalie Roger Crozier. Crozier simply was not having a great night.
Maki recorded a career high 48 points twice during his career, in 1965-66 and 1970-71. In that 1970-71 campaign, Chico topped the 20 goal plateau for the only time, scoring 22. He had three two-goal games and one was particularly special.
On December 9, 1970 at home against the expansion Buffalo Sabres, Maki scored a pair of shorthanded goals in the third period of a 6-1 win. The first was scored at 8:38, assisted by Bobby Hull and Jerry Korab with Cliff Koroll in the box. The second was put past Buffalo goalie Dave Dryden at 17:06, again assisted by Hull.
Between 1960-61 and 1975-76, Chico Maki played 841 regular season and 113 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. His first game with the team was during the post season in 1960-61, the year Chicago won the Stanley Cup championship.
