Card Notes
Little guy played in the shadow of Jacques Plante for many years, then grabbed regular job from Gump Worsley after Plante was traded. Charlie won the Vezina Trophy.
Details
Jacques Plante was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the New York Rangers for the start of the 1963-64 season. Indeed, Charlie Hodge stepped it up in a big way. He played 62 of 70 games for the Habs that season, posting a 2.26 goals against average while winning the Vezina Trophy, his first of two.
That same season, the answer to the trivia question at the bottom of the card, he led the National Hockey League with eight shutouts. He was one ahead of Glenn Hall of the Chicago Blackhawks and had two more than Eddie Johnston of the Boston Bruins.
Hodge continued to play with the Canadiens until he was taken by the Oakland Seals in the 1967-68 NHL Expansion Draft. He played three years with the Seals and finished his NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks in their inaugural 1970-71 season.
