Card Notes

He is the Kings’ candidate for the Lady Byng Trophy, having drawn only four minutes in penalties the last two seasons. He once scored six points in one game, a Kings’ record.

En Français

Candidat des Kings pour le Trophée Lady Byng, car il n’a eu que quatre minutes de punition durant les deux dernières saisons. Il a déjà accumulé six points en une partie, un record chez les Kings.

Details

On February 5, 1972, in a 8-1 home win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Butch Goring had two goals and four assists for six points. The team record was tied several times but not broken until Bernie Nicholls had an eight point game against the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1988.

In that game, Butch had a three point first period, scoring the first goal of the game, his tenth of the 1971-72 NHL season, on Pittsburgh goalie Jim Rutherford. Before the frame was done, he assisted on Mike Corrigan‘s game winner and scored his 11th of the year. He went on to get assists on a pair of Gilles Marotte goals and a single by Bob Berry.

Again in 1973-74, Goring received just a single minor penalty while leading the Kings in scoring. Yet, he was denied the Lady Byng Trophy, finishing third in voting behind winner John Bucyk and runner-up Lowell MacDonald. It was a great injustice that he was often in the running for the award but won it just once, in 1977-78 with Los Angeles.

Between 1969-70 and 1984-85, Butch Goring played 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. He helped the Islanders to four Stanley Cup championships, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1980-81.
