Details
The 95 points Bryan Trottier contributed during his 1975-76 rookie season still stand today as the ninth best total by an NHL rookie. The current record belongs to Teemu Selanne with the 132 points he put up for the Winnipeg Jets in 1992-93.
After going pointless in his first NHL game, a 1-1 tie on the road against the Kansas City Scouts, Trottier and the Islanders cranked it up for the 1975-76 home opener. Bryan had a hat trick and added two assists for a five point night. Linemate Clark Gillies put in four assists and was certainly a sign of things to come for Islanders fans with this dynamic duo. To make the feat even more meaningful, all seven goals that night were scored on future Hockey Hall of Fame goalie, Rogie Vachon.
On December 23, 1978, Trottier upped the team record with an eight point night against the New York Rangers. He still stands as one of just eleven players to record eight or more points in a single NHL game.
That night, he also set an NHL record that still stands today. Trottier had six assists in the second period. Him and Mika Zibanejad are the only two players to have six helpers in a single period. Teammate Garry Howatt picked up the Gordie Howe Hat Trick that night with a goal, assist and third period fight.
