Card Notes
A former rookie of the year and one of the NHL’s fastest skaters. He’s often underrated, but has twice scored 30 goals in one season. Not a hard hitter, but is extremely clever with the puck. Once scored five goals in a game.
February 1, 1964. Bobby Rousseau indeed scored five goals in one game. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Detroit Red Wings 9-3 on that night at the Forum. Henri Richard collected five assists, four on Rosseau goals and one on a goal by Yvan Cournoyer.
The impressive thing is that this was a hard earned five goal performance. Detroit had an off-season in 1963-64 but the likes of Gordie Howe, Bill Gadsby, Pit Martin, Norm Ullman and Alex Delvecchio were in the lineup that night.
However, in goal for the Red Wings was not Terry Sawchuk but a young Roger Crozier. The following year, Crozier would win the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. During the 1963-64 season, he was awarded the Dudley Red Garrett Memorial Award as AHL rookie of the year and the Harry Hap Holmes Memorial Award for the goalie with the league’s lowest GAA. All that was done with the Pittsburgh Hornets.
So, with a rookie goalie in net, Rousseau scored his 14th through 18th goals of the season. Importantly, none were cheapies into an empty net. The performance helped Bobby to a 25 goal season in his third full campaign with the Canadiens.
