Details

There is a slight ERROR on the back of this 1982-83 O-Pee-Chee Bobby Carpenter hockey card. In 1980-81, he did play 18 games for St. John’s Prep High School. However, his point total should read 47, not 38.

Carpenter was one of just three players taken in the first round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft to not play junior hockey in the CHL. The other two, drafted from Europe, never played in the National Hockey League. The Washington Capitals took Bobby third overall, behind just Dale Hawerchuk and Doug Smith.

Bobby had a standout rookie season in 1981-82, scoring 32 goals while playing all 80 games jumping straight to the NHL from high school hockey. Among those 32 goals, four were scored in a single game against Mike Liut and the St. Louis Blues on February 25, 1982. More details on that game are available in the attached Facebook post below.

Between 1981-82 and 1998-99, Bobby Carpenter played in 1,178 regular season and 140 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Capitals, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. He helped the Devils to a Stanley Cup championship in 1994-95.
