Details

In 1972-73, Blake Dunlop led the OHL with 99 assists and 159 points playing for the Ottawa 67’s. He was third in goal scoring with 60, seven behind leader Rick Middleton of the Oshawa Generals. This earned him the Eddie Powers Trophy as top scorer but Middleton was given the Red Tilson Trophy as the league’s most valuable player. The performance got the attention of the Minnesota North Stars and they picked Dunlop in the second round of the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft.

It never worked out with Minnesota and Blake spent much of his first six years of pro hockey in the minors. He performed well in the AHL, finishing fifth with 37 goals in his rookie 1973-74 season with the New Haven Nighthawks. In 1977-78 with the Maine Mariners, Dunlop was honoured with the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL’s MVP. He was tenth in the league with 82 points and helped the Parker MacDonald coached Mariners to a Calder Cup championship.

His NHL career finally took off in 1978-79, putting up 20 goals over 66 games with the Philadelphia Flyers. However, he was off to the St. Louis Blues for 1979-80 and had the most success of his career while in Missouri. In 1980-81, he tied with Randy Carlyle for seventh in the NHL with 67 assists. That year, he was honoured with the Bill Masterton Trophy.

Between 1973-74 and 1983-84, Blake Dunlop appeared in 550 regular season and 40 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the North Stars, Flyers, Blues and Detroit Red Wings.
