Details
Blaine Stoughton showed early signs of being an offensive threat with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1974-75, scoring 23 goals over 78 regular season games then four more in seven playoff games. However, in 1975-76, he fell out of sort with the Maple Leafs and ended up in the CHL with the Oklahoma City Blazers for the last half of the season.
A move to the WHA in 1976-77 brought back the scoring touch he showed off in junior with the Flin Flon Bombers. He led the Cincinnati Stingers with 52 goals, a number good enough to place him tied for fourth in the league with teammate Rich Leduc, 18 behind leader Anders Hedberg of the Winnipeg Jets.
Stoughton’s numbers would again flounder after that, though, until his return to the NHL with the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80. That year, Blaine tied Charlie Simmer and Danny Gare for the league lead with 56 goals each. It was the first of two times he would reach the 50 goal plateau with the Whalers.
Originally the seventh overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft, Blaine Stoughton played 526 regular season and just eight playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1973-74 and 1983-84 with the Penguins, Maple Leafs, Whalers and New York Rangers.
