Details

On January 28, 1972, the Los Angeles Kings traded Bill Flett, Eddie Joyal, Ross Lonsberry and Jean Potvin to the Philadelphia Flyers for Serge Bernier, Larry Brown, Bill Lesuk and Jim Johnson. Flett was taken by the Kings in the 18th round, 103rd overall, from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft.

Prior to 1967-68, Bill spent three years in the minors, never appearing in the NHL. With the Kings, he was an instant regular and responded with 26 goals and 46 points as a rookie. This got him a look for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, finishing fourth in voting behind winner Derek Sanderson, runner-up Jacques Lemaire and Philadelphia goalie Doug Favell.

1972-73 was a career year for Flett. Despite nine games during the regular season, he scored 43 goals and totaled 74 points. He finished fifth in the NHL for goal scoring, 12 behind leader Phil Esposito. He would remain with the Flyers long enough to win a Stanley Cup with the club in 1973-74 before ending up in Toronto.

Between 1967-68 and 1979-80, Bill Flett played 689 regular season and 52 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames and Edmonton Oilers. He also had a three year stint in the WHA from 1976-77 to 1978-79, appearing in 195 regular season and 15 playoff games with the Oilers.
