Details
After spending four years in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, exclusively with their minor league clubs, Bill Flett was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings 103rd overall at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. He went from career minor leaguer to Calder Trophy candidate in his first year with the Kings. He would eventually return to Toronto later in his career and play for the Maple Leafs.
In 1967-68, Flett scored 26 goals in 73 games and finished fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, a considerable distance behind winner Derek Sanderson of the Boston Bruins. He led Los Angeles in goal scoring and his 46 points were second on the team, eleven behind leader Eddie Joyal.
Of his 26 goals, six were scored over two games at Detroit Olympia against the Detroit Red Wings. His first NHL hat trick came on November 5, 1967 in a 6-4 road win over the Red Wings. Flett scored his 4th, 5th and 6th goals of the 1967-68 NHL season on Detroit goalie Roger Crozier. He was responsible for nine of the 41 shots put toward Crozier in the game.
1970-71 saw his numbers drop to 13 goals over 64 games. The following year, he started the season with the Kings, appearing in 45 games before a January 28, 1972 trade sent him to the Philadelphia Flyers with Jean Potvin, Ross Lonsberry and Eddie Joyal for Jim Johnson, Bill Lesuk, Larry Brown and Serge Bernier. With the Flyers, Bill would go on to a career best 43 goal season and a Stanley Cup championship.
Between 1967-68 and 1979-80, Bill Flett played 689 regular season and 52 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames and Edmonton Oilers. Flett also played 195 regular season and 15 playoff games in the WHA between 1976-77 and 1978-79 with the Oilers.
