Card Notes
“Bernie’s first NHL shutout came for Capitals at Detroit, January 10, 1977. He blanked the Red Wings 2-0, in a superb performance.”
That night at the Detroit Olympia, Bernie Wolfe stopped all 26 shots put towards him by the Detroit Red Wings. Bill Collins scored the game winner short handed in the first period. Yvon Labre added the second goal in the second period. Labre would also get in a scrap with Dennis Polonich in the third.
This would be the only shutout Wolfe would earn during his short National Hockey League career. He played four seasons with the Capitals from 1975-76 to 1978-79, appearing in 120 regular season games. The 18 games he played for Washington in 1978-79 would be the last of his career.
In 1992, with Bernie now 40 years ago, the Capitals attempted to sign him to a contract. The purpose was to keep the team’s current goaltenders protected in the expansion draft to help populate the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators. The contract was not approved by the league.
