Card Notes
1978-79 would be the last year in the National Hockey League for Bernie Parent. In a game against the New York Rangers on February 17, 1979, Parent suffered a career ending eye injury. He ended the season appearing in 36 games with a 2.70 goals against average and four shutouts. There was no sign that his career was on a downward slide right up until the injury.
The sudden departure of Bernie Parent paved the way for Pete Peeters to ramp up his NHL career. Peeters appeared in just five games in 1978-79 as a call-up from the AHL’s Maine Mariners, his first five games in the NHL. He would take over the number one role with the Flyers for the next three seasons before ending up with the Boston Bruins for the 1982-83 season.
Bernie Parent played in 608 regular season NHL games between 1965-66 and 1978-79 with the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs. He posted a career 2.55 GAA with 54 shutouts. Parent was a two time winner of both the Vezina Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy. He helped the Broad Street Bullies to two Stanley Cup championships. Bernie Parent was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
