Card Notes

Anyone watching Boom Boom Geoffrion in the 1957-58 playoffs against Detroit and Boston may have found it difficult to believe that a few months earlier the Canadiens’ bombastic winger was close to death. Injuries are nothing new to Geoffrion, his career has been literally dotted with them. He had in fact missed 92 games since joining the team in 1950-51, playing only 142 of the team’s last 210 games.

Details

Throughout his NHL career, Bernie Geoffrion put in just one full season over 16 campaigns. That 70 game year came in 1954-55 with the Montreal Canadiens. It paid off with Boom Boom tying for the league lead in goal scoring, equaling the 38 put up by teammate Maurice Richard. His 75 points were enough to capture the Art Ross Trophy. He would win his second in 1960-61.

In 1958-59, he only played 59 of Montreal’s 70 games but it was a 17 game increase over the previous campaign. He produced at over a point per game, finishing the year with 66. In the post season, he helped the Canadiens to their fourth of five consecutive Stanley Cup championships. Over his career, Geoffrion was part of six championship teams, all with Montreal.

Geoffrion was at his 1958-59 regular season best in a December 14, 1958 6-1 win over the Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. Bernie scored his 15th, 16th and 17th goals of the season on Detroit goalie Terry Sawchuk. He also assisted on the game winning goal by Dickie Moore and a third period marker by Ab McDonald for a five point game.

In the post season, Geoffrion had a pair of three point games to finish off the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup final. In game 4, he scored the winning goal and in the Cup clinching game five, Boom Boom had a pair of goals and assisted on a Ralph Backstrom marker.

On an individual level, 1960-61 was the pinnacle of Bernie’s career. He became just the second NHL player to score 50 goals in a season with exactly 50 over 64 games. He took home the Art Ross with 95 points and was handed the Hart Trophy for the only time during his Hockey Hall of Fame Career.

Between 1950-51 and 1967-68, Bernie Geoffrion played in 883 regular season and 132 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens and New York Rangers. He joined the Rangers in 1966-67 after a two year retirement from the game. In 1972-73, he became the first ever head coach for the Atlanta Flames.
