Details

There is an ERROR on the back of this Andy Bathgate 1953-54 Parkhurst rookie card. He did play just 18 games with the New York Rangers before being sent down to the WHL. However, he went to the Vancouver Canucks and not the Saskatoon Quakers. A bit of clarification, he tied for the Canucks lead in playoff scoring and not the overall lead. His 15 points equaled teammate Larry Popein.

16 years later, Bathgate returned to play for the WHL Canucks, leading them to consecutive championships in 1968-69 and 1969-70. In 1969-70, his 108 points placed him second in the league in overall scoring behind just Art Jones.

Over his 18 games in 1952-53, Andy didn’t score but collected his first NHL point, assisting on a Dean Prentice goal in a 5-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. In 1953-54, Bathgate still wasn’t quite ready for primetime, playing 20 games with the Rangers and spending the rest of his season with the WHL’s Canucks and the AHL’s Cleveland Barons. He won a Calder Cup title with the Barons.

Bathgate’s first NHL goal did come in that 1953-54 season, though. In just his second game of the season, Andy scored on Al Rollins of the Chicago Blackhawks with help from Ron Murphy and Camille Henry. The Rangers won the game 3-1. His only other goal of the season was also against the Hawks.

Between 1952-53 and 1970-71, Andy Bathgate played 1,069 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. The one-time Stanley Cup champion with the Leafs had a career year in 1958-59 with the Rangers, scoring 40 goals and totaling 88 points, placing third in the NHL in both categories.
