Details
There’s a bit of an ERROR on the back of this 1957-58 Topps Alex Delvecchio hockey card. The trivia snippet says he scored 18 goals in 1956-57 but the stats line says 16. The actual number was 16. Alex scored three more in the playoffs for the Red Wings.
Delvecchio recovered nicely for the 1957-58 season, playing in all 70 games for the Wings while contributing 21 goals and 59 points. He finished eighth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, tied with Jean Beliveau of the Montreal Canadiens. his 38 assists placed him sixth in the NHL, 14 behind leader Henri Richard.
1957-58 also began a string of seven consecutive seasons not missing a regular season game. In fact, between 1957-58 and 1967-68, he missed just two games for the Red Wings. That’s 772 of 774 games.
Between 1950-51 and 1973-74, Alex Delvecchio appeared in 1,550 regular season and 121 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Detroit Red Wings. The three time Lady Byng Trophy winner and three time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
