Details

On September 11, 1952, Al Rollins, Cal Gardner, Gus Mortson and Ray Hannigan were traded to the Chicago Blackhawks from the Toronto Maple Leafs for Harry Lumley. In 1951-52, Rollins had played all 70 games for the Leafs, posting a 2.22 goals against average and five shutouts. Prior to that, in 1950-51, he played 40 games for the club, putting up a 1.77 GAA with five blanks, earning the Vezina Trophy while also helping the team to a Stanley Cup championship.

In that 1952-53 NHL season, his first with the Blackhawks, Rollins played all 70, recording a 2.50 GAA with six shutouts. Harry Lumley in his first year with Toronto played all 70 with a 2.34 GAA and ten shutouts.

Of course, in 1953-54, Al was awarded the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP despite his team finishing dead last with just 12 wins. With a terrible team in front of him, it was Rollins that ensured those 12 wins.

Between 1949-50 and 1959-60, Al Rollins played 430 regular season and 13 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers. He is a rare Hart Trophy winner who was not selected for the Hockey Hall of Fame.
