A great stickhandler, he’s one of the best one-on-one players. When he gets the puck he can be at full speed in only one step. Butch wears the same helmet he’s had since age 13.

After sitting just 36 minutes in penalties over his first eight seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, 1977-78 would finally be the year Butch Goring took home the Lady Byng Trophy. He was within the top five for voting in the previous four seasons. Despite a career total of 102 PIM over 1,107 regular season NHL games, he would never get any real consideration for the award again.
1977-78 would also see a career high of 37 goals for Butch. His 87 points the following season would stand as a personal best. Between 1971-72 and 1980-81, Goring had a string of ten consecutive seasons topping the 20 goal plateau. Included in that run were four straight seasons of 30 or more with the Kings.
His best individual numbers occurred while in Los Angeles. However, it was after a March 10, 1980 trade sent him to the New York Islanders for Billy Harris and Dave Lewis when he found his greatest success. Goring played an important role in the Islanders four year run at the Stanley Cup championship.
Between 1969-70 and 1984-85, Butch Goring appeared in 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Kings, Islanders and Boston Bruins. Not a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, for some reason, Goring was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1980-81 and had his number 91 retired in 2020.
