In 56 games, he scored 31 goals and totaled 100 points. Babych also saw his first WHL action in the form of six games with the Winter Hawks.

The following year, Dave was starring with Portland as the Winter Hawks finished second overall in the WHL and reached the final before falling to the powerful Brandon Wheat Kings in six games. Babych was over a point per game in both the regular season and playoffs.

In his final year of major junior, Dave was honoured with the Bill Hunter Trophy as the WHL’s top defenseman and named a First Team All-Star.
