Last season was the best ever for Lowell, as he led the Penguins in goal-scoring. He was the only Pittsburgh player to appear in all 78 games. He made a dramatic comeback in 1972-73 after being out of the game completely the season before. He is a past winner of the Bill Masterton Trophy for “dedication, perseverance and sportsmanship.”

Between knee injuries, Lowell had an outstanding four year stretch with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1972-73 to 1975-76. The pinnacle was 1973-74 when he led the club with 43 goals. That total placed him sixth in the NHL, a distant 25 goals behind leader Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins.
Lowell MacDonald had a pair of hat tricks amongst those 43 goals. Both were against the Minnesota North Stars but his performance on March 27, 1974 at the Pittsburgh Civic Center was outstanding. The North Stars had jumped to a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. Lowell single handedly got the Penguins back in the game with three consecutive goals on Minnesota goalie Gump Worsley. The match ended in a 3-3 tie.
Unfortunately, chronic knee problems took over after the 1975-76 season and MacDonald’s career was done. It was the same problem that kept him out of the 1971-72 season. At that time, his career was nearly over.
Between 1961-62 and 1977-78, Lowell MacDonald played in 506 regular season and 30 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins. Although he never played for them, Lowell was property of the Toronto Maple Leafs after being traded from the Red Wings on May 20, 1965 with Autry Erickson, Larry Jeffrey, Eddie Joyal and Marcel Pronovost for Andy Bathgate, Billy Harris and Gary Jarrett.
