Details

1981-82 was definitely a break-out year for Paul Coffey. He was a Second Team All-Star at defense and finished third in voting for the Norris Trophy, behind Doug Wilson and Ray Bourque. His 29 goals, 60 assists and 89 points were just a taste of what was to come for this high scoring blue liner. Coffey still hold the record for most goals in a season by a defenseman with 48 in 1985-86. He topped 100 points in five seasons.

O-Pee-Chee notes the 89 points he totaled with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 1978-79. However, it does not note that he upped that number to 102 the following season. In 1979-80, his final year of junior hockey, Paul split time between the Greyhounds and the Kitchener Rangers. That performance got him picked sixth overall at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.

Between 1980-81 and 2000-01, Paul Coffey appeared in 1,409 regular season and 194 playoff games in the National Hockey League. One of the most well-travelled NHL players, Coffey played for the Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins.

Over his career, Paul won the Norris Trophy on three occasions, twice with the Oilers and once with the Red Wings. He was a four time Stanley Cup champion, three times with the Oilers and once with the Penguins. He also went to the finals with the Flyers and Red Wings. Coffey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
