Derek Sanderson’s time in St. Louis was about to come to an end when this 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee hockey card came out. On February 18, 1977, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. In 1976-77, Sanderson appeared in 32 games for the Blues, scoring eight goals and totaling 21 points. With Vancouver, he played just 16 games but did contribute 16 points.
In his first game with the Canucks, a February 19, 1977 match at the Pacific Coliseum against the Atlanta Flames, Sanderson contributed goal and assist for two points in a 5-1 win. Derek assisted on the game winning goal by Larry Goodenough and scored his ninth of the season shortly after, assisted by Rick Blight and Dennis Kearns.
Unfortunately, he would play just 13 more games in the NHL after that season. Vancouver was done with Derek prior to the start of the 1977-78 season. He was picked up by the Pittsburgh Penguins and appeared in 13 game in 1977-78, scoring just three goals and adding an assist.
Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Derek Sanderson appeared in 598 regular season and 56 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Calder Trophy winner in 1967-68 topped the 20 goal plateau six times over his NHL career.
