Al (“Don’t call me Junior”) broke into NHL with the Canadiens, was traded to the Rangers in June of ’61, and then, in mid-season of 1963-64, to the Red Wings. A good skater for a big man, Al teamed up in Montreal and New York with Doug Harvey. Sparked Wings into playoffs. A big defenseman, Al had to lick weight problem.

What is interesting about the back of this 1964-65 Topps Al Langlois hockey card is that the trivia blurb to the right is different in French than it is in English. The English section refers to his weight problems while the French section notes that he sells tractors in Montreal in the summertime.

1964-65 would be Langlois’ second and final year with the Red Wings. On May 31, 1965, he was traded to the Boston Bruins with Bob Dillabough, Ron Harris and Parker MacDonald for Bob McCord, Ab McDonald and Ken Stephanson. He play one full season with the Bruins before finishing out his career in the WHL for the 1966-67 season.

The solid, stay-at-home defenseman scored a total of 21 goals over 497 regular season games. His best campaign came in 1961-62 when he scored seven for the Rangers. Two of the seven were game winners in big games.

The first came in a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden on February 4, 1962. In the second period, Dave Balon opened the scoring for New York at 4:47. Al then put the Rangers up 2-0, scoring on Montreal goalie Jacques Plante less than two minutes later. New York goalie Marcel Paille was outstanding, stopping 40 of 41 shots from a much more powerful Canadiens team.

The second was in another close affair, a 5-4 win over the Red Wings at Detroit Olympia on March 6, 1962. Down 4-2 nearly halfway through the third period, the Rangers got goals from Larry Cahan and Camille Henry before Langlois put home the winner at 12:00 with his seventh of the year, assisted by Ted Hampson and scored on Hank Bassen.

Between 1957-58 and 1965-66, Al Langlois played 497 regular season and 53 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He was a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs.
