Most rookies that score 28 goals and total 71 points in their first National Hockey League season would be a front runner for the Calder Trophy. In 1980-81, Dave Christian was down the list in voting for the rookie of the year award at ninth. In a strong year of first year players, Peter Stastny of the Quebec Nordiques was given the honour. Larry Murphy, Don Beaupre, Denis Savard and Darryl Sutter were also ahead of Christian in voting.

In 1980-81, Christian recorded second of four career hat tricks in the NHL. On February 12, 1981 at Madison Square Garden, Dave put three goals past New York goalie Doug Soetaert. Unfortunately, it was not enough to give Winnipeg what would have been just their seventh win in the first 57 games of the season. The Jets fell to the Rangers 8-6.

In fact, when Christian scored three goals in an NHL game, his team was a mediocre 2-2. His final hat trick came in a win, however. On October 15, 1988, now with the Washington Capitals, he scored three and assisted on a Kevin Hatcher goal for four points in an 8-5 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Dave came out of the University of North Dakota to spend the 1979-80 season playing for the U.S. National Team in preparation for the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Miracle On Ice team captured gold at the games, held in Lake Placid, New York, by taking out the powerful Soviet Union.

Dave Christian went on to play 1,009 regular season and 102 playoff games in the NHL between 1979-80 and 1993-94 with the Jets, Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
