Denis Potvin would again lead the New York Islanders in 1976-77 with 55 assists and 80 points. By the following year, though, Bryan Trottier would take over as the team’s offensive leader. Included in his 80 was a five point game against the Colorado Rockies.

On March 22, 1977 in a 9-2 home win, Potvin scored his 22nd and 23rd of the 1976-77 NHL season. He also assisted on goals by Jude Drouin, Bob Nystrom and Bryan Trottier. Denis was responsible for five of the 38 shots put toward the Colorado goaltending duo of Michel Plasse and Doug Favell.

Despite losing to the Montreal Canadiens in six games in the 1977 semi-final, Potvin had a decent series with four goals and an assist. Three of his points came in a game three 5-3 home win, helping the Islanders to their first win of the set. He scored twice on Ken Dryden while also assisting on a J.P. Parise goal. Jude Drouin also had a three point game and Billy Smith stopped 35 of 38 shots in the win.

Between 1973-74 and 1987-88, Denis Potvin played 1,060 regular season and 185 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Islanders. The four time Stanley Cup champion was the first overall pick by the Islanders at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft out of the Ottawa 67’s. The three time Norris Trophy winner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
