Details
There is a slight error on the back of the 1978-79 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Stephenson hockey card. He played six years with the Canadian National Team and not seven.
1978-79 would be the last of Stephenson’s five seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. He led the Flyers with 40 games played, just ahead of Bernie Parent and his 36. However, Wayne’s goals against average rose significantly to 3.36 after being at 2.76 or lower over his previous four seasons. He still recorded a pair of shutouts and had a 20-10-5 record.
The blanks were both low shot affairs. On November 30, 1978, he faced 17 in a 3-0 home win over the St. Louis Blues, his former team. The Flyers got offense from Blake Dunlop, Behn Wilson and Bobby Clarke. On March 14, 1979, Stephenson faced just 15 shots in a 4-0 victory over the Blackhawks at Chicago Stadium. Ken Linseman, Bill Barber, Reg Leach and Dave Hoyda had the goals for Philadelphia.
Prior to the 1979-80 campaign, Wayne was traded to the Washington Capitals for a third round draft pick. In his first season with the Caps, Stephenson appeared in 56 games. The following year, he played just 20 before retiring.
Between 1971-72 and 1980-81, Wayne Stephenson played 328 regular season and 26 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals. He recorded 14 regular season and two post season shutouts. Wayne won a Stanley Cup with the Flyers in 1974-75.
