Card Notes
Joyal was a bright Red Wing prospect before they traded him away in off-season to Leafs. Big boy who can stickhandle and shoot, he has yet to untrack himself and fulfill potential.
En Français
Joyal était une récrue des Wings avant d’être échange aux Leafs pendant le jeu hors-saison. Ce gros gaillard possède un bon lancer, mais il lui reste encore a se degager et faire ses preuves dans la ligue Nationale.
Details
Eddie Joyal would play just 14 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1965-66, his only time with the club. However, in the minors, he was outstanding. With the Tulsa Oilers of the CPHL, Joyal scored 32 goals in just 44 regular season games and with the AHL’s Rochester Americans, he scored nine in nine games.
He came to the Maple Leafs from the Detroit Red Wings as part of a May 20, 1965 trade that also saw Larry Jeffrey, Lowell MacDonald, Marcel Pronovost and Autry Erickson to to Toronto in exchange for Andy Bathgate, Gary Jarrett and Billy Harris.
Joyal’s first NHL goal was scored against the Maple Leafs and it was a game winner. On February 10, 1963 at Detroit Olympia, Eddie assisted on the opening goal of the game, scored by Gordie Howe at 5:33 of the second period. At 2:13 of the third, Eddie scored on Johnny Bower, assisted by Marcel Pronovost and Larry Jeffrey, to make the score 2-0 for Detroit. Ron Stewart would break Hank Bassen’s shutout attempt but the Red Wings came away with a 2-1 victory.
At the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft, Joyal was the fifth player selected by the Los Angeles Kings and his NHL career finally took off after that. Between 1962-63 and 1971-72, Eddie played 465 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. He also appeared in 239 regular season and six playoff games in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers between 1972-73 and 1975-76.
