The team tied for second overall during the regular season with the Niagara Falls Flyers, eight points behind the first place Kitchener Rangers. In the league playoffs, it was the Marlboros ousted the Hamilton Red Wings in the final to earn the J. Ross Robertson Cup. They won the Memorial Cup, taking out Port Arthur in the final.
In 1971-72, Pelyk played just 46 regular season games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite getting 58 shots on net, Mike scored just a single goal for a 1.7% scoring percentage. That one goal came in a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Maple Leaf Gardens on December 25, 1971. The goal was scored on Joe Daley at 2:35 of the second, assisted by Don Marshall and Guy Trottier to tie the game 3-3. Bill MacMillan had a hat trick for Toronto in the game.
Pelyk’s top offensive output in the NHL came in 1973-74 when he scored 12 goals and assisted on 19 for 31 points over 71 games. He had a pair of two goal games, including in a 6-4 win over the Bruins at Boston Garden on March 3, 1974. His first, assisted by Darryl Sittler and Rick Kehoe, tied the score at 1-1 after John Bucyk opened the scoring. The second, his eleventh of the season, assisted by Tim Ecclestone and Dave Keon, served as the game winner.
