Details
Chico Maki was not considered for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year in 1962-63. However, it was the year he became an NHL regular and he never returned to the minors. In 65 games, he scored seven goals and assisted on 17 for 24 points. The Calder that year went to Kent Douglas, a defenseman from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Maki did have NHL experience prior to the 1962-63 season. The stats on the back of this 1962-63 Topps hockey card represent his time in the AHL with the Buffalo Bisons in 1961-62. However, that year he also played 16 games for the Blackhawks. His first NHL game was in the 1960-61 playoffs when he appeared in a single game for Chicago.
In 1959-60, playing for the St. Catharines TeePees, Maki led the OHA Junior A with 92 points over 47 games, earning the Eddie Powers Trophy. He had just a single point edge over runner-up Rod Gilbert. In the year prior, Chico’s 94 points put him as the runner-up, three points behind teammate Stan Mikita.
With the Buffalo Bisons in 1960-61, Maki was awarded the Dudley Red Garrett Award as top rookie. That year, he scored 30 and assisted on 42 for 72 points. In his partial year with the Bisons in 1961-62, Chico helped the team reach the Calder Cup final before losing to the Springfield Indians.
Maki’s first NHL goal was scored in his fifth game of the 1961-62 season against the Boston Bruins. Scored at 7:51 of the third period on Don Head, assisted by Bobby Hull and Bronco Horvath, it was the final goal in a 6-0 Chicago win at Boston Garden.
In his 13th game of that season, his next two goals were more important. In a January 31, 1962 game against the Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Stadium, he scored a pair on Terry Sawchuk, including the game winner in a 4-1 win. The first was set up by Stan Mikita and Pierre Pilote while the second was assisted by Bobby Hull and Bill Hay.
Between 1960-61 and 1975-76, Chico Maki played 841 regular season and 113 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. Maki reached the 20 goal plateau just once, scoring 22 in 1970-71.
