Details
1960-61 saw Dick Duff continue his sharp decline in goal scoring for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After years with 26, 26 and 29 goals to close out the 1950’s, Duff put up 19 in 1959-60 and just 16 in 1960-61. Still, as his pure offensive role diminished, Dick played an important part of Stanley Cup championships in 1961-62 and 1962-63 with the Leafs.
His best season offensively would remain 1958-59 when he led Toronto with 29 goals and 53 points. Duff finished eighth in goal-scoring, 16 behind leader Jean Beliveau of the Montreal Canadiens. In the 1959 Stanley Cup playoffs, Dick had two game winning goals. The first was in the opening round against the Boston Bruins and the second was a game 3 overtime goal in the final series against the Habs.
That game, Toronto’s only win of the series, was played on April 14, 1959 at Maple Leaf Gardens. With the game tied at 2-2 after regulation play, it took Duff a little more than ten minutes of overtime play to give the home team the victory. He put his fourth of the playoffs past Montreal goalie Jacques Plante, assisted by George Armstrong.
In 1960-61, his lone playoff point came again in overtime. This time, it was game 2 of the opening round series against the Detroit Red Wings on March 22, 1961 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Ron Stewart tied the score at 2-2 for the Leafs late in the third. It took until 4:51 of the second overtime period before George Armstrong put one past Detroit goalie Terry Sawchuk with Duff and Allan Stanley getting the helpers. For Stanley, it was his third assist of the game.
Between 1954-55 and 1971-72, Dick Duff played 1,030 regular season and 114 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
