Details

The record that Schultz tied on April 6, 1978 has also been equaled by eight other players and was beat by Chris Nilan in 1991 when Knuckles was assessed ten penalties. At the time, the Hammer tied just Jim Dorey of the Toronto Maple Leafs who accumulated nine penalties in a game in 1968. Of those with nine or more, it’s Randy Holt who holds the record for most PIM with 67.

The game on April 6, 1978 was played at Detroit Olympia with the Red Wings beating the Penguins 6-4. The game was just 23 seconds old when Schultz was assessed his first minor penalty. By the end of the first period, Dave had four minors and a misconduct. In the third, he had a minor for slashing and two separate fights with Dennis Polonich. The second fight came with an extra misconduct. In all, Schultz was assessed 40 minutes in penalties.

1979-80 would be the end of Schultz’s NHL career. He played just 13 games for the Buffalo Sabres and appeared in his final game on November 11, 1979, a 5-3 home loss to the Colorado Rockies. In that game, he fought for the last time, a first period scuffle with Rob Ramage. His final goal was scored on October 20 in a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

Between 1971-72 and 1979-80, Dave Schultz played 535 regular season and 73 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. Schultz was a two-time Stanley Cup champion and holds the NHL record for most PIM in a season with 472 in 1974-75.
