Details
At the 1980 Winter Olympics, held in Lake Placid, New York, Ken Morrow helped the United States to a gold medal victory. In the seven games, the defenseman contributed a goal and two assists for three points. Later that year, he helped the New Islanders to Stanley Cup championship and became the first player to win both an Olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup in the same year.
Morrow’s lone goal of the 1979-80 NHL playoffs was scored in overtime against the Los Angeles Kings in the best of five opening round series. On April 11, 1980 at the Forum in Los Angeles, the Isles went into the third period down 3-1. However, Clark Gillies and Butch Goring scored to tie the game and send it into overtime. Ken scored at 6:55 of the fourth period on L.A. goalie Mario Lessard, unassisted.
The low scoring blue liner had just eleven goals over 127 games in the post season. However, three of those eleven were game winners, all three in overtime. His OT GWG on April 10, 1984 gave the Islanders a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers and a 3-2 opening round series win. That one was scored on Glen Hanlon at 8:56 of the first overtime, assisted by Brent Sutter.
Between 1979-80 and 1988-89, Ken Morrow played 550 regular season and 127 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Islanders. Morrow was a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Islanders.
