Dick announced his retirement this year after training camp, but coach Claude Ruel still hopes Dick will reconsider – one of the truly all time left wingers of the modern NHL era.

Details

Dick Duff would reconsider his retirement and return to the Montreal Canadiens in 1969-70, returning to the club for their 16th match of the season on November 15, 1969, a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. However, after 17 games with the Habs, Duff was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on January 23, 1970 for Dennis Hextall and a second round draft pick that turned out to be Larry Robinson.

His time with the Kings was limited and lackluster. He appeared in 32 games over the remainder of 1969-70, scoring five goals. He started the 1970-71 campaign in L.A. but was traded to the Buffalo Sabres with Eddie Shack after just seven games.

In the 1968-69 Stanley Cup playoffs with the Canadiens, Duff played the final 14 post season games of his career. Dick was outstanding, recorded 14 points in those 14 games and six over the four game sweep of the St. Louis Blues in the final series. He scored the game winner in game 2 and had a three point game in the third match.

In that game 3 4-0 shutout win, Duff assisted on the opening goal of the game by Serge Savard. After Jacques Lemaire made it 2-0, Dick scored the final two for the Habs. Rogie Vachon made 29 saves for the blank, the first of just two playoff shutouts over his NHL career.

Between 1954-55 and 1971-72, Dick Duff played 1,030 regular season and 114 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres. The 6-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
