Details
Of course, Wayne Gretzky would obliterate the records he set in 1980-81. He scored 92 goals in 1981-82 then set the marks for assists and points in 1985-86 with 163 and 215. Still, the 164 points he put up in just his second NHL season topped the previous record set by Phil Esposito in 1970-71 by 12 points.
An interesting stat in 1980-81, in the 13 games when Gretzky did not get a point, the Edmonton Oilers did not win a single game, going 0-9-4. His best game of the year came on February 18, 1981 at Northlands Coliseum in a 9-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. The Blues were considerably better when it came to the standings but the Oilers came to play.
Gretzky had five goals and two assists for seven points in the match. His first goal of the game, scored early in the second, held as the game winner. With the score 4-2 Edmonton going into the third, the Oilers scored five unanswered. Paul Coffey scored just 36 seconds into the period before Wayne went to town. He scored four straight, including a shorthanded marker. Two of the goals were scored nine seconds apart and chased St. Louis starting goalie Mike Liut from the game.
In 1981-82, he put his 1980-81 performance to shame with 92 goals and 120 assists for 212 points. He had a point in 72 of Edmonton’s 80 games and topped out with a seven point match against the Minnesota North Stars.
Between 1979-80 and 1998-99, Wayne Gretzky played 1,487 regular season and 208 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. The four-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999.
