On October 12, 1983 at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Buffalo Sabres entered the third period with a 4-2 lead on a pair of goals by Real Cloutier and singles by Bill Hajt and Larry Playfair. Toronto’s goals both came off the stick of Rick Vaive. At 6:34 of the third, Bill Derlago scored his second of the 1983-84 NHL season, assisted by Pat Graham. At 16:52, Graham and Frank Nigro set up Derlago for the game tying goal.

This was one of eight two-goal games for Bill in 1983-84, part of a career best 40 goal campaign, three of them included game winners. Included were a pair at the Boston Garden, helping the Leafs take down the powerful Bruins 6-3. Toronto had a pair of goals each from Derlago, John Anderson and Peter Ihnacak. Allan Bester stood tall making 49 saves on 52 shots in the match.

Playing just 62 games for the Maple Leafs in 1984-85, Derlago still put up great numbers with 31 goals and 31 assists for 62 points. Included were three hat tricks and one was particularly unique. On December 14, 1984 at Winnipeg Arena, Bill had three of Toronto’s goals in a 6-4 loss to the Jets. Two of those three were scored shorthanded.

Two of those 1984-85 hat tricks came in losses. On April 3, 1985 in a 9-7 road loss to the Minnesota North Stars, Derlago had a five point game on three goals and assists on a pair of John Anderson goals.
