Mike was up with Leafs for six games last year but sent to Rochester for further development. Is given a good chance this year to land a starting spot and hopes to become the 3rd NHLer from Kirkland Lake currently playing in the NHL.

Mike Walton didn’t quite catch on full-time with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1966-67, but did appear in 31 regular season and 12 playoff games with the NHL club. Mike also played 36 games for the Rochester Americans putting up an impressive 52 points. He joined the Leafs in time to help capture a Stanley Cup championship.

In those 1967 playoffs, Walton contributed four goals and three assists over the 12 games. In game 2 of the final series against the Montreal Canadiens, Mike had two points in a 3-0 win at the Montreal Forum. He assisted on the first goal of the game, scored by Pete Stemkowski in the first period. That goal held as the game winner. Walton also scored Toronto’s second goal of the game, assisted by Jim Pappin and Frank Mahovlich.

During his six game tryout in 1965-66, Walton had both his first NHL goal and first NHL assist in his second game. On November 21, 1965 at Chicago Stadium, Mike scored Toronto’s seventh goal in a 7-3 win, putting one past Blackhawks goalie Glenn Hall with help from Ron Ellis. He also assisted on the opening goal of the game, scored by Eddie Shack.

Between 1965-66 and 1978-79, Mike Walton played 588 regular season and 47 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. He also appeared in 211 regular season and 23 playoff games in the WHA between 1973-74 and 1975-76, all with the Minnesota Fighting Saints.

Walton was CPHL rookie of the year in 1964-65 with the Tulsa Oilers, scoring 40 goals and assisting on 44 for 84 points. The following year, he was awarded the Dudley Red Garrett Award as AHL rookie of the year while posting 86 points over 68 games with the Rochester Americans. He won a Calder Cup championship with the Amerks that year. He was a two-time Stanley Cup champion, once with Toronto and once with Boston.
