Card Notes
Bobby was voted the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s most valuable player two season ago. He has firmly established himself as the cornerstone of the Flyers. He serves as the team’s captain and does just about everything well. He’s a tireless skater, at top scorer, a fine checker and a power play artist. In short, Bobby is “Mr. Flyer”.
Details
ERROR! Of course, the MVP of the NHL is awarded the Hart Trophy and not the Art Ross Trophy. Bobby Clarke did win the Hart in 1972-73 and would again in 1974-75 and 1975-76. As for the Art Ross Trophy, Clarke came close but never won that award.
The category that Clarke did lead the NHL in for the consecutive season, 1974-75 and 1975-76, was assists. In each, he recorded 89, tying Bobby Orr in 1974-75 and finishing with a 18 assist edge over runner-up Pete Mahovlich in 1975-76.
Yes, Clarke was a power play artist but it was when playing a man short that Bobby was best able to find the back of the net. He finished his NHL career with 32 shorthanded goals and led the league in 1973-74 and 1976-77.
Between 1969-70 and 1983-84, Bobby Clarke played 1,144 regular season and 136 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Philadelphia Flyers. The two-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
