Details

The near centre ice goal referred to on the back of this 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Jacques Lemaire hockey card occurred in game seven of the final series against the Chicago Blackhawks. On May 18, 1971, the Hawks hosted the Habs at Chicago Stadium and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. However, Lemaire got the rally going at 14:18 of the second, scoring on Tony Esposito from a good 60 feet out.

Just over four minutes later, Jacques assisted on Henri Richard‘s game tying goal. It was Richard who scored the game, series and Stanley Cup winning goal at 2:34 of the third period, assisted by Rejean Houle and Guy Lapointe.

Lemaire did lead the Canadiens with seven game winning goals in 1971-72, one ahead of runner-up Pete Mahovlich. A clutch player, 58 of his 366 regular season goals over his NHL career were game winners.

In his final year with the Scotty Bowman coached Montreal Junior Canadiens, 1965-66, Jacques tied for second with Mickey Redmond, both scoring 41 goals. The pair were just three behind league leader Danny Grant. Grant and Redmond were both members of the Peterborough TPT’s. Lemaire’s 93 points placed him fourth behind the trio of Andre Lacroix, Danny Grant and Bobby Orr.

Between 1967-68 and 1978-79, Jacques Lemaire played 853 regular season and 145 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He was part of an amazing eight Stanley Cup championship teams over his 12 years in the NHL. Lemaire was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
