Mike Liut did put up a 2.44 goals against average for the St. Louis Blues in the 1983-84 Stanley Cup playoffs, along with a .920 save percentage over eleven games. The Blues were sub-par during the regular season, finishing with just 71 points over the 80 game schedule.
However, being in the weaker Norris Division had its perks and they qualified for the post season, finishing second in the division behind the Minnesota North Stars. St. Louis took out the Detroit Red Wings in the opening round before bowing to the North Stars in the division final, the series going the full seven games.
Liut recorded his first of two career playoff shutouts in game six of the series with Minnesota, keeping the Blues alive for a game seven. In that home game at St. Louis Arena, Mike stopped all 32 shots put his way. Bernie Federko scored the game winning goal at 11:21 of the first period on North Stars goalie Don Beaupre, assisted by Brian Sutter and Rob Ramage.
After missing the playoffs in 1984-85, Liut was a bright light for the Hartford Whalers in 1985-86. Playing eight of Hartford’s ten playoff games, Mike put in a 1.91 GAA to go with a .938 save percentage and a shutout. The fourth seed in the Adams Division upset the first seed Quebec Nordiques in the opening round, a three game sweep. The Whalers then took the Montreal Canadiens the full seven before conceding.
Between 1979-80 and 1991-92, Mike Liut played 664 regular season and 67 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers and Washington Capitals. The fourth round pick by the Blues at the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft played two years in the WHA, 1977-78 and 1978-79, with the Cincinnati Stingers.
