The North Stars’ leading scorer in 1980-81, Bobby also topped the club with 13 power play goals while tying for lead with 7 game winning goals. He is an exceptional passer and puck handler. Bobby was winner of Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL’s rookie of the year in 1978-79.

Bobby Smith’s 93 points in 1980-81 led the Minnesota North Stars by a sizable gap over Tim Young and his 66. His 25 points in 19 playoff games were second on the squad behind Steve Payne’s 29. The Stars eliminated the Bruins, Sabres and Flames before falling to the New York Islanders in the Stanley Cup final.
1981-82 would turn out to be a career year for Smith, recording 114 points on 43 goals and 71 assists playing alongside Dino Ciccarelli. He placed eighth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, just three points behind Marcel Dionne but a distance 98 behind winner Wayne Gretzky. His 71 assists were good for seventh in the NHL.
The first overall pick at the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft by the North Stars out of the Ottawa 67’s scored 30 and totaled 74 in his 1978-79 rookie season. He won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year by a wide margin over runner-up Ryan Walter of the Washington Capitals.
Between 1978-79 and 1992-93, Bobby Smith played 1,077 regular season and 184 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Minnesota North Stars and Montreal Canadiens. He was a Stanley Cup champion with the Habs in 1985-86.
