Details

In that October 31, 1978 home game for the New York Islanders, the Colorado Rockies held a 1-0 lead until Bob Bourne scored his first of the game and third of the 1978-79 NHL season at 4:30 of the second period. The goal was scored on Bill Oleschuk and assisted by Bob Lorimer.

Still, the Rockies didn’t roll over and were leading 3-1 before Bourne scored his second of the game at 12:06 of the second, assisted by Pat Price and Bob Nystrom. The Isles went to work in the third frame, erasing Colorado’s 3-2 lead at 2:01 with a Nystrom goal, assisted by Bob. Bourne then assisted on goals by Garry Howatt and Denis Potvin to finish out his five point game.

Bourne’s arrival on Long Island is an interesting one. He was originally drafted by the Kansas Scouts in the third round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft after a junior career with the Saskatoon Blades. However, prior to the 1974-75 NHL season starting, he was traded to the Islanders Larry Hornung and Bart Crashley. Hornung stayed in the WHA, never playing for the Scouts while Crashley appeared in just 27 games for Kansas City.

Between 1974-75 and 1987-88, Bob Bourne played 964 regular season and 139 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Islanders and Los Angeles Kings. The four time Stanley Cup champion received the Bill Masterton Trophy in his final year in the NHL.
