Bill Barber and Steve Vickers both finished their rookie 1972-73 NHL season with 30 goals, leading first year players and tying for 28th overall. Vickers took the nod for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year while Barber was the runner-up.
On October 29, 1972 Bill recorded an assist in his first NHL game. In a game at the Spectrum in Philadelphia against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Barber had a helper on a Rick MacLeish goal scored on Toronto goalie Ron Low. In his third game, he would amp it up with a four point night on a goal and three assists.
In 1975-76, Barber recorded 50 goals and 112 points. At the time, he and Reg Leach joined Rick MacLeish as the only players in Flyers history to reach the 50 goal plateau. Since, just Tim Kerr, Mark Recchi and John LeClair have joined the club. He was the second behind Bobby Clarke to reach the 100 point plateau in franchise history.
Between 1972-73 and 1983-84, Bill Barber played 903 regular season and 129 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Flyers. Originally the seventh overall pick by Philadelphia at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, Barber was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990 and has his number 7 retired by the Flyers and his junior club, the Kitchener Rangers.
