Details
1975-76 would see Gary Sabourin reach the 20 goal plateau for the fifth and final time over his NHL career. He was fifth in goal scoring on the California Golden Seals behind Al MacAdam, Dennis Maruk, Wayne Merrick and Bob Murdoch.
Game number 500 in Sabourin’s NHL career was pretty special. Playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, on January 18, 1975 the team was on the road against a powerful Montreal Canadiens club at the Forum. The Buds handed the Habs just their seventh loss in 45 games with Sabourin assisting on two goals, including Bob Neely’s game winner. Neely’s goal was scored on Montreal goalie Michel Larocque and also assisted by Dave Williams.
Things went downhill quick for Gary. In 1976-77, he moved with the Golden Seals franchise to Cleveland. He played just 33 games for the Barons before retiring from the game. Originally a prospect of the New York Rangers, Sabourin got his NHL start with the expansion St. Louis Blues in 1967-68.
Between 1967-68 and 1976-77, Gary Sabourin played 627 regular season and 62 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blues, Maple Leafs, Seals and Barons. He had two 28 goal seasons with St. Louis and went to the Stanley Cup final three times with the team.
