Details
Red Berenson played the full 80 game schedule for the St. Louis Blues in 1977-78, serving as team captain for the season. He decided to retire prior to the 1978-79 campaign and moved behind the bench in a coaching role. Red was head coach in St. Louis for parts of three seasons and after a two year stint as assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabres moved on to a legendary career with the University of Michigan.
Berenson’s final NHL goal was scored in his second last game. On the road against the Los Angeles Kings, Red scored the game winner on Rogie Vachon and was assisted by Garry Unger and Bruce Affleck with just 39 seconds left in the match. The score ended 3-2 Blues and Red accounted for three of just 15 shots on Vachon.
His final hat trick came during a February 28, 1978 game against the Minnesota North Stars at the Checkerdome. Berenson scored his 7th, 8th and 9th goals of the 1977-78 NHL season in a 7-1 win. All three were scored on Paul Harrison in a chippy affair that saw several misconducts handed out.
Between 1961-62 and 1977-78, Red Berenson played 987 regular season and 85 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He helped the Habs to a Stanley Cup championship in 1964-65, despite playing just three games during the regular season. Red was a Jack Adams Award winner with the Blues in 1980-81.
