Details
Despite leading the NHL’s rookie defensemen in scoring for the 1974-75 season, Ron Greschner finished just fifth in voting for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Eric Vail of the Atlanta Flames took the award with Pierre Larouche, Danny Gare and Bob Hess also in the running.
His two game winning goals in 1974-75, mentioned on the back of the card, occurred within four days of each other. On January 1, 1975, he scored the game winning goal in a 6-2 home victory over the Chicago Blackhawks while also assisting on a Jean Ratelle marker. On January 5, he again scored the third Ranger goal in another 6-2 win, this time over the Vancouver Canucks.
Greschner would reach the 20 goal plateau four times during his NHL career. His personal best came in 1980-81 when he scored 27. He had a career best 72 points in 1977-78. His one career hat trick came on March 22, 1978 in a road game against the St. Louis Blues. He put his three goals by Phil Myre on just three shots in a 6-1 win at the Checkerdome.
Between 1974-75 and 1989-90, Ron Greschner played 982 regular season and 84 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Rangers. He helped the Blue Shirts to the Stanley Cup final in 1978-79 before losing to the Montreal Canadiens.
