Card Notes

Butch is one of the toughest young prospects to come along in recent seasons. He has played previously for Buffalo and Atlanta in the National Hockey League, but his big league experience is limited. The stocky forward likes to throw his weight around and is certainly no stranger to the penalty box. The Scouts rated Butch highly and selected him in the second round of the Expansion Draft. Butch’s real name in Ernest.

Butch Deadmarsh would appear in just 20 games with the Kansas City Scouts before jumping to the WHA during the 1974-75 season. He would not return to the NHL. In the WHA, he played 255 regular season and eight playoff games between 1974-75 and 1977-78 with the Vancouver Blazers, Calgary Cowboys, Minnesota Fighting Saints, Edmonton Oilers and Cincinnati Stingers.

One of his three goals with the Scouts was a game winner. On November 3, 1974 at the Capital Centre against their expansion cousins, Butch scored at 12:19 of the third period, assisted by Ed Gilbert and Larry Giroux, to break the 4-4 tie. The Scouts beat the Capitals 5-4, coming back from a 4-2 deficit.

Deadmarsh was a second round pick by the Buffalo Sabres at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft after playing major junior with the Brandon Wheat Kings. In 1969-70, Butch led the WCHL with 361 penalty minutes, 118 more than runner-up Chris Oddleifson of the Winnipeg Jets.

Between 1970-71 and 1974-75, Butch Deadmarsh played 137 regular season and four playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Atlanta Flames and Kansas City Scouts. He played for all three teams in their inaugural NHL seasons.
