Details

Today, Dean Prentice is tied for 14th all-time with 22 seasons played, four behind both Gordie Howe and Chris Chelios. The others at the time this hockey card came out to play 20 or more seasons were Gordie Howe, George Armstrong, Tim Horton, Alex Delvecchio, Ron Stewart, Eric Nesterenko, Marcel Pronovost, Bill Gadsby, Red Kelly and Harry Howell. This may have been slightly misinterpreted by O-Pee-Chee.

Prentice’s 1,378 regular season games played places him tied for 48th all-time with Vincent Damphousse and Joe Sakic, two players that benefited from a longer schedule. He finished his career with 391 goals. That total might have put him close to the all-time Top 10 in 1972 but, today, there are 47 players that have 500 or more goals.

In 1972-73, Dean had a bit of a swansong season, scoring 26 goals for the Minnesota North Stars. It was the second best single season total of his long NHL career and just six goals shy of the 32 he scored with the New York Rangers in 1959-60.

The following year, Prentice would play just 24 games for the North Stars before retiring. Over those 24 games, he scored just two goals. The first of the two was scored in the Stars first game of the season, a 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. His last NHL goal was scored in a November 14, 1973 6-3 home win over the Vancouver Canucks.

Between 1952-53 and 1973-74, Dean Prentice played 1,378 regular season and just 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. He reached the Stanley Cup final in 1965-66 with the Red Wings, losing to the Habs in the final.
