Mike enjoyed perhaps the finest rookie campaign in NHL history last season. He established a new league record by scoring 53 goals as a rookie. Included in his total were 25 power play goals as he won Rookie of the Year recognition.

Mike Bossy, indeed, had an outstanding rookie season for the New York Islanders in 1977-78. It didn’t take him long to start racking up the goals. In his first game, a 3-2 road loss to the Buffalo Sabres on October 13, 1977, Bossy scored his first NHL goal just over nine minutes into the game. A look into the future of the franchise, Clark Gillies and Bryan Trottier assisted on the historic marker. Don Edwards was between the pipes for the Sabres.

Despite 53 goals on the season, Mike had just a single hat trick. On February 4, 1978, the Islanders hosted the Washington Capitals and had an easy time of it in a 6-1 win. Bossy scored his 37th, 38th and 39th goals of the campaign, all assisted by Trottier. His second goal of the game proved to be the game winner. Bernie Wolfe was the victim in the Washington nets that night.

It was no contest for the Calder Trophy win in 1977-78. Bossy received more than twice the votes that second place Barry Beck was given. Also in the running were Don Edwards, Dale McCourt and Reed Larson. Mike was also named a Second Team All-Star at left wing.

Between 1977-78 and 1986-87, Bossy appeared in 752 regular season and 129 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Islanders. He helped the club to four Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
